Chairman's Message

Carmen Mercado, NAHREP Chairman

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the online home of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. We are a mission-driven organization that is part business, part cultural connection, part advocacy driven. Our goal is to increase sustainable homeownership in the Latino community by empowering the real estate professionals that serve it.

In the wake of the worst financial crisis in modern times, we have serious work ahead of us. Nearly one million Latino families have lost their homes to foreclosure, and millions more have suffered devastating financial setback during the Great Recession. As Washington reshapes the housing business through new regulations and reforms, we are the compelling voice speaking on behalf of the generations of future Latino homeowners to come.

As the voice of Hispanic real estate, NAHREP and its 18,000 members are committed to advocate changes that protect new buyers, preserve access to homeownership and help beleaguered families recover. We know that in the current environment having a knee jerk culture to create and change regulations will have unintended consequences that can do more harm than good.

Homeownership is the foundation for wealth creation for Latinos. Renting never funded a college education, provided capital for a new business or created inheritance for children. We must be part of the movement that ushers in a new era of responsible, sustainable choices that get the housing economy back on track and families back into neighborhoods as stakeholders.

Trust that NAHREP and its legion of passionate advocates will have a strong voice in shaping the landscape during these pivotal times. With honor, pride and trust, we embrace the responsibility with purpose, vision and compassion.

We welcome you to check back here from time to time to look in on our progress and our efforts to preserve the dream of homeownership for the Latino community.

Carmen Mercado
2011-2012 Chairman
